Nike Week 10

Nike, an Oregon-based company, will take continue taking on a political role. The company will be joined by a few others in creating Oregon’s tax policy for 2019. Senior director of government and public affairs, Julia Brim-Edwards is facilitating Nike’s involvement.  She has already taken political action by supporting public employee unions through the creation of the Common Good Fund; it supports employee unions and has defeated anti-tax ballot initiatives that would’ve made future tax cuts difficult. Of the $300,000 raised through fundraising, Nike has contributed $225,000. These measures have given Nike the ability to consider several different taxing options for the upcoming year.

A spokesperson claimed that “Nike works to find common ground with businesses of all sizes, community members and groups, public employees and elected leaders. We want Oregon to be a great place for our employees to live and work, and for businesses to grow and thrive.” I didn’t realize that a company like Nike would take action like this, but it is a nice surprise. Getting involved in tax policy for their given reason reveals that they are concerned with more than their own business. The state tax policy affects several businesses and individuals, and Nike wants to ensure that people are positively affected.

Another way Nike has expressed its concern for people’s well being is by creating the ISPA (Improvise, Scavenge, Protect, Adapt) shoes. Not only are they designed for comfort for a 3 to 5 mile walk, the sneaker is completely waterproof. It is a great concept that ensures exceptional comfort no matter what. And, it isn’t a bad looking design. It will be available for purchase next week, with the price yet to be announced.

Nike also announced that their partnership with the Premier League has been extended through 2025. The company has provided great match balls with innovative designs year after year. This announcement wasn’t surprising as Nike generally pleases all of its large customers. I am happy to hear that Nike is pursuing large projects that fulfill their mission as a company.
